The Man I Wanted to Marry Was Living a Double Life
I met a man in 2022 who seemed like every woman's dream. He was handsome, confident, generous, and always knew how to make me laugh. We met in Port Harcourt through a mutual friend, and before long, we became inseparable. He never looked like someone struggling. He drove nice cars, wore expensive clothes, and always had money whenever we went out. At first, I didn't ask too many questions because everything seemed perfect. Whenever I asked about his work, he would tell me he was involved in importation and logistics. Sometimes he travelled for days and came back with gifts for me and my family. My parents liked him, and my friends kept telling me I had finally found a good man. As our relationship became serious, I started noticing strange things. He never allowed me to visit where he lived. Whenever I suggested it, he would give one excuse or another. Sometimes he would disappear for two or three days without answering calls. When he finally returned, he always had a convincing explanation, and I foolishly believed him every time. One evening, while we were having dinner, his phone kept ringing. He stepped outside to answer the call, but he looked nervous when he came back. Later that night, I saw several missed calls from a woman saved under a man's name. When I asked him about it, he laughed and said it was a business partner. Something about his response didn't sit well with me. A few months later, I received a message from an unknown number. The woman introduced herself and claimed she was his wife. At first, I thought it was a joke or maybe someone trying to destroy our relationship. She sent pictures of them together, family photos, and even screenshots of conversations that proved they were still married. When I confronted him, he admitted that he had lied. Not only was he married, but the business he claimed to run was not what he told me. He confessed that many of the things he owned were acquired through illegal deals and shady activities. The expensive lifestyle that impressed everyone was built on lies. I was devastated. I had already introduced him to my family as the man I wanted to marry. Some of my relatives had even started discussing our introduction ceremony. The worst part was realizing that I ignored so many red flags because I was in love with the version of him he created. I ended the relationship immediately, but moving on has been difficult. Sometimes I still wonder how someone can look you in the eye every day, talk about marriage, and make future plans while hiding an entire life from you. Now I'm left with one question: if you discovered that the person you loved was living a double life, would you walk away immediately, or would you stay and try to understand why they lied?
