HE WANTS ME TO CONVERT FOR OUR LOVE, BUT HE DOESN’T EVEN TAKE HIS OWN FAITH SERIOUSLY

My boyfriend and I have always known that our relationship has one major problem: religion. I was raised in a deeply Muslim home where Islam was not just something we identified with; it was a way of life. Wearing the hijab, praying five times a day, reciting the Quran, observing religious teachings and respecting the doctrines of our faith were things my siblings and I were taught from childhood. I have never had to question who I am religiously because being Muslim is all I have ever known. Then I met Daniel(don't want to use his real name). We have been together for a year, but ours is already a complicated relationship because we are in a long-distance relationship. In that entire year, he has only seen me three times, yet somehow he has developed so much confidence in our future that sometimes I wonder if he sees something I don't. He talks about marriage, children and building a life together as though everything has already been decided. The biggest issue is that Daniel is Christian, and he believes we cannot build a lasting marriage while being unequally yoked. At first, I thought he was simply asking us to find a compromise, but lately, he has been making it clear that he expects me to consider Christianity. He talks about us becoming "equally yoked" as though converting is a simple decision I can make for the sake of love. And honestly, that scares me. How do I abandon the faith I was raised in just because I love someone? Islam is not a dress I can take off today and put back on tomorrow. It is connected to my family, my upbringing, my identity and everything I have believed since childhood. If I convert, it wouldn't just be a relationship decision; it would change a huge part of who I am. What makes me even more confused is that Daniel himself isn't exactly the most serious Christian. He doesn't consistently practise his faith the way he expects me to practise his. Sometimes I find myself thinking, How are you asking me to become deeply committed to Christianity when you aren't even deeply committed to being a Christian yourself? I love him, and I don't want religion to be the reason we lose each other. But I also don't want to wake up years from now and realise I gave up something so important to me just to keep a relationship alive. Daniel seems convinced that love will eventually make everything work out. I'm not so sure anymore. Because the question isn't simply whether I love him enough to convert. The question is whether I should have to give up my faith to prove that I love him. And lately, I've started wondering if we're trying to force a future that was never meant to happen in the first place.
