MY EX TRIED TO KILL ME, AND I LIED ABOUT WHAT REALLY HAPPENED

Six months ago, something happened to me that I still struggle to talk about. My ex-boyfriend of two years attacked me during an argument and seriously injured me. I was rushed to the hospital, and for a while, I genuinely didn't know how things would turn out. But when people started asking what happened, I told them I had hurt myself. I blamed myself instead of telling the truth about him. I think part of me was scared. Scared of what people would say. Scared that nobody would believe me. Scared of the shame, the questions, and everything that would come after. Looking back now, I realize how dangerous it is to keep quiet about violence just to protect someone else's reputation. I survived, but the experience changed me. Ladies, please don't ignore controlling behaviour, threats, extreme jealousy, or sudden aggression just because you love someone. A relationship should never make you afraid for your safety. If someone you are dating has ever made you feel unsafe, please take it seriously. Talk to someone you trust and seek help. I survived, but I wish I had spoken up sooner. Have you ever stayed silent about something terrible that happened to you because you were afraid of people's reactions?

Please ladies, don't confuse jealousy and control with love. Those things can become dangerous

The fact that she protected him even after what happened shows how complicated abusive relationships can be

In Nigeria, people will sometimes tell you to “settle it” when you are actually dealing with violence. Please take your safety seriously
