I Slept With Another Man—Now My Faith Feels Complicated
I’m a Catholic guy from a fairly religious Nigerian family, and I’ve always taken my faith seriously. I grew up going to Mass every Sunday, saying my prayers, and hearing my parents talk about the importance of keeping yourself pure until marriage. I never imagined I would one day be sitting alone in my room, terrified of going to confession because of something I had done. A few weeks ago, I got emotionally close to another guy I had known for some time. It started innocently enough. We talked late at night, shared personal things and became comfortable around each other. Somewhere along the line, things crossed a boundary I had always promised myself I would never cross, and we ended up having sex. The moment it was over, I felt completely different. Instead of happiness or relief, I felt this horrible wave of shame. I kept thinking about everything I had been taught growing up. I couldn't even look at myself properly. I went to Mass the following Sunday but spent the entire time feeling like a hypocrite sitting among everyone else. The worst part is that I feel like I've lost something I can never get back. I had always imagined my first sexual experience would happen within marriage, and now I feel like I have thrown that part of my life away. Every time someone talks about purity, sin or confession, I feel like they're somehow talking directly to me. I know what a Catholic would normally be expected to do: go to confession, admit what happened and seek forgiveness. But the thought of sitting in front of a priest and saying it out loud makes my stomach turn. What if he looks at me differently afterwards? What if he thinks I'm disgusting? What if somehow my family finds out? Then something happened that made everything even worse. The guy I was with messaged me and told me that he had been feeling guilty too. He said he had something important to tell me, but before he could explain, he stopped replying to my messages. For two days, I couldn't stop wondering what he wanted to say. Then I saw him at Mass. He was sitting a few rows ahead of me, beside someone I recognised immediately—my parish priest. After Mass, I watched them talking privately, and I started panicking. For a moment, I honestly thought he had told the priest everything and that somehow my secret was about to become public. But when the priest eventually approached me, he didn't mention the guy or what happened between us. He simply asked me, “My son, is there something you're carrying that you need to let go of?” I nearly broke down right there. I still haven't told him what happened, and I don't know whether I should. I’m scared of confession, scared of judgment, and honestly scared of what this experience says about me. Am I wrong for being too ashamed to confess, or should I stop running from my faith and finally tell the priest the truth?
