MY FRIEND’S HUSBAND ASKED ME A QUESTION I REFUSED TO ANSWER — NOW HE SAYS I’M DESTROYING THEIR MARRIAGE
My friend’s husband called me last month, and I still don’t know if I handled it right. When I saw his name, I feared something had happened to her, so I picked up. “Hello, is everything okay?” I asked. He paused, then said, “I want to ask you something.” It made me uneasy. “My wife has been unhappy for months. She talks to you. I know she trusts you.” I stayed quiet. Then he asked, “Has she ever said she wants to leave me?” I froze. She had complained about their marriage, but she had never said she wanted to leave. I didn’t feel right sharing private conversations, so I said, “You should talk to your wife directly.” He didn’t like that. “So she has told you something?” I clarified I wouldn’t repeat private things. He got angry and insisted I tell him everything. Then he said, “You women always protect each other.” I ended the call. The next day, my friend called crying. “What did you tell my husband?” I was confused until she explained. He had gone through her phone, read our messages, and now believed I was influencing her against him. He accused me of hiding things and trying to ruin their marriage. She kept saying, “I never told you I wanted to leave him.” I told her I knew. He was now questioning her about me and our conversations. I didn’t know what to say. I felt torn. Maybe I should have been more open, but I also believe I shouldn’t repeat private conversations between friends and their spouses. Still, I understand his suspicion. He felt left out of his own marriage. But I don’t think I should be the messenger between them. If she wants to leave or stay, she should say it herself. Now my friendship is strained. He doesn’t trust me, and she’s afraid to talk to me. She may stop sharing her marriage problems with me, which hurts, but I never meant to cause harm. It has made me question how far friends should get involved in marriages. Should we listen and advise, or step back completely? I’ve decided to be more careful. I can listen and encourage communication, but I won’t carry messages between spouses. Because it is their marriage, not mine. Still, I keep asking myself: did I do the right thing by staying silent, or should I have been more transparent? What would you have done?
What would you have done?
