The Man Who Raised Me vs The Man Who Made Me
I grew up believing my father abandoned me before I was even born. That was the story I heard all my life. Whenever I asked questions, my mother would sigh and say he walked away when he found out she was pregnant. I carried that pain for years. It shaped how I saw myself and how I saw him—a man I had never met but somehow learned to resent. When I was young, my mother remarried. Her husband became the father figure in my life. He paid my school fees, provided for my needs, and was present for birthdays, graduations, and every milestone in between. People called him my father, but deep down, I never fully accepted the title. I respected him, but part of me always felt like I belonged to someone else. As I got older, curiosity began to replace anger. I wanted answers. I wanted to hear the story from the man whose blood runs through my veins. For years, I searched without success. Every lead ended in disappointment, and eventually, I almost gave up. Then one evening, while browsing online with my mother, I found a profile that matched his name. My heart nearly stopped. After staring at the screen for several minutes, I gathered the courage to send him a message. I wasn't sure he would reply, but he did. When we finally spoke, I introduced myself and explained who I was. The conversation that followed changed everything I thought I knew. He claimed he never knew my mother was pregnant. According to him, their relationship ended before he had any idea a child was on the way. He insisted he never abandoned me because he never knew I existed. At first, I didn't know what to believe. My mother's version of the story and his version were completely different. One of them had to be wrong. The more we talked, the more convinced he seemed of his innocence. He repeated the same explanation over and over, answering every question I asked without hesitation. Since then, I've felt trapped between two realities. On one side is the man who gave me life. On the other side is the man who gave me a life. One contributed his blood; the other contributed his years. One is my biological father; the other is the reason I never lacked a father figure growing up. Things became even more complicated when my boyfriend started talking seriously about marriage. He wants to meet my parents and begin the traditional introduction process. What should have been a joyful moment has become a source of anxiety for me. My mother's husband has always made his position clear. He raised me, cared for me, and believes that role cannot be replaced. He once told me that carrying his surname doesn't automatically make me his daughter, but the years he invested in me should count for something. At the same time, my biological father has recently entered my life, and I can't ignore the connection I feel toward him. Now my fiancé keeps asking when he can come and "see my people," and I honestly don't know what to tell him. When the day comes and the drinks are brought out, who should sit in the father's seat? The man who raised me or the man who created me? Between blood and sacrifice, who truly deserves to be called my father?
Between blood and sacrifice, who truly deserves to be called my father?
