I Trusted My Roommate With My Life—She Secretly Recorded Me

Hi EUCARL, I am writing to share an experience that has been deeply distressing and completely unexpected from someone I once considered a close friend. I moved in with my roommate because we were very close at the time. I trusted her completely. We shared meals, clothing, personal challenges, relationship issues, and nearly every aspect of our daily lives. I felt safe around her and never imagined I had anything to fear from someone I regarded as a sister.I was wrong. One day, I received a message from someone I barely knew. They told me they had come across a video of me online and asked if I was aware of it. At first, I assumed it was a joke or some form of scam. However, when I opened the link, my heart sank. It was me. I was in a private moment, completely unaware that I was being recorded. I had never given anyone permission to record me, let alone share such footage online. I immediately confronted my roommate. Initially, she denied any involvement and acted as though she had no idea what I was referring to. However, after repeated confrontation, she eventually admitted the truth. She had deliberately positioned her phone to record me. Her reason was that we had an argument, and she intended to embarrass me. By the time I discovered what had happened, the video had already been downloaded and circulated by others. I felt violated, humiliated, and deeply betrayed. For several days, I struggled to leave my home. Going to work became difficult as I constantly worried about who had seen the video. Every phone notification triggered anxiety, and I withdrew from communication because I felt ashamed to face people. But the truth is, I was not the one who should have felt ashamed. I did not consent to being recorded. I did not consent to the video being shared. My only mistake was trusting someone I believed was my friend. Eventually, I moved out and reported the matter. There is currently a pending case against her, and I am hoping for justice. However, even if the video is eventually removed from the internet, the emotional impact may take much longer to heal. The most painful part is not only the violation of my privacy, but the realization that the person responsible was someone I lived with, shared meals with, confided in, and trusted deeply. This experience has taught me a lesson I will never forget: Be extremely careful about who you trust, especially those you live with. Sometimes, the person closest to you has the greatest access to your private life. Unfortunately, not everyone deserves that level of trust. I am sharing my story in the hope that others can learn from it and avoid experiencing something similar. Have you ever discovered that someone you trusted was secretly betraying you? What did you do?

What did you do?
