I Keep Calling My Boyfriend by My Ex's Name... And It's Destroying Our Relationship
This my first in this platform, I want to unburden my concerns here. I'm crying as I type this because I honestly don't know what else to do. I've been dating an incredible man for the past eight months. It's a long-distance relationship, and although we've never met in person, we've spent countless hours talking on the phone, texting, praying together, laughing, and making plans for our future. I love this man with all my heart. But one mistake keeps coming back to haunt me, and I fear it's about to cost me the person I want to spend my life with. A few months into our relationship, I accidentally called him by my ex's name during one of our phone conversations. The moment the name left my mouth, I froze. He was hurt, but I apologized over and over. I explained that it wasn't intentional and begged him to understand. I genuinely believed it was just an old habit that would disappear with time. Unfortunately, it happened again. And then... after months of trying to be more careful, it happened again last week. This time, he completely shut down. He told me he no longer trusts me. He believes no woman repeatedly calls the man she loves by another man's name unless she's still emotionally attached or secretly talking to him. I understand why he feels that way. If the roles were reversed, I honestly don't know how I would react either. But here's the painful truth... I have absolutely no feelings for my ex. None. My previous relationship was also long-distance. Just like my current one, we never met physically. Everything happened through phone calls and messages. When that relationship ended, I blocked my ex everywhere, deleted his number, and completely moved on. We don't talk. We don't text. We have no contact whatsoever. That's why I'm struggling to understand what's happening. Why does that name still slip out? Is my brain confusing familiar phone conversations because both relationships happened the same way? Is it just muscle memory? Or is there something psychological that I don't understand? I'm not trying to make excuses. I'm trying to save my relationship. Every apology I make now sounds like another lie to him. Every explanation makes him more suspicious. It's like no matter what I say, I've already been judged. The worst part is knowing that one careless word can erase months of loyalty, honesty, and genuine love. I'm exhausted. I'm frustrated. And I'm terrified that I'll lose someone I truly love over something I never meant to do. Please, I need honest advice. Has anyone genuinely experienced something like this before? Why do these name slips happen even when you've completely moved on?
