The Three Letters That Didn't Destroy Me

There was a time when I thought my life was over. The day I found out I was HIV positive, I sat alone for hours staring at the wall. My mind was filled with fear. I wasn't just afraid of the virus itself; I was terrified of what people would think if they ever found out. I had heard the jokes, the whispers, and the harsh judgments people made about those living with HIV. Suddenly, I felt like I had become the very person they were talking about. For a long time, I carried the diagnosis like a secret too heavy to hold. Every hospital visit felt lonely. Every new friendship came with anxiety. I constantly worried that someone would discover my status and see me differently. The fear of rejection became almost as exhausting as the diagnosis itself. What hurt the most was realizing how much stigma still exists. Some people assume they know your entire life story the moment they hear those three letters. They forget that HIV does not erase a person's dreams, character, intelligence, or worth. It doesn't cancel out their humanity. There were moments when I questioned my future. I wondered if I would ever feel normal again. I wondered if I would always carry this invisible burden. But somewhere along the journey, I became tired of living in fear. I became tired of feeling ashamed of something I never asked for. Slowly, I started rebuilding my confidence. I focused on my health, my goals, and the life I still wanted to create. I learned that a diagnosis is not an identity. HIV became a chapter in my story, but it was never the entire book. Today, I am still here. I have faced judgment, uncomfortable questions, and moments that tested my strength. Yet I continue to move forward. I refuse to make myself smaller just to make others comfortable. I refuse to live in shame. I am not looking for pity. I am choosing life, purpose, and self-respect. HIV is part of my story, but it will never define who I am.
