The Regret I Will Carry for the Rest of My Life
I have carried this guilt for years, and I don't think it will ever leave me. I grew up in a poor home where every meal felt like a miracle. My mother did everything she could to raise my younger sister and me after our father died. She sold vegetables under the hot sun, skipped meals so we could eat, and never complained. When I got my first good job, I promised myself that she would never suffer again. Life had other plans. I got married, and things slowly changed. My wife and my mother never got along. It started with little arguments but soon became constant tension. To keep peace in my home, I began visiting my mother less. Sometimes she would call, asking if I could stop by or help with her medications. I was always "busy." I would tell myself I'd go next weekend. Next weekend became next month. One evening she called me. Her voice was weak. She said, "My son, I just wanted to hear your voice. I miss you." I told her I was in a meeting and promised to call back. I never did. The following morning, my younger sister called me crying. Our mother had died in her sleep. When I got to her small room, I saw the food I had sent her untouched. Beside her bed was a plastic bag containing a sweater she had bought for me with the little money she had saved. There was also a handwritten note. It read, "I know you're busy building your own family. Don't worry about me. Seeing you happy is enough for me." That note broke me. It's been six years, and I still keep it in my wallet. I have achieved everything I once prayed for—a better job, a beautiful house, nice cars—but I would trade all of it for one more chance to answer that last phone call. If your parents are still alive, please don't wait until tomorrow to show them love. Money can replace many things, but it can never buy back time or one final conversation. My question is: Have you ever ignored someone you loved, thinking there would always be another chance, only to realize later that you were wrong?
