Starting Over Quietly
I left a job that was draining everything out of me. For years I told myself the exhaustion was just what adulthood felt like, that tired was the baseline and everyone else was better at hiding it. Then one day I handed in my notice, and nothing dramatic happened. No applause, no panic. Just a quiet walk to my car with a box that weighed almost nothing. This morning I woke up without dread sitting on my chest. The light came through the curtains slowly, and I lay there listening to the ordinary sounds of the street, a gate creaking, someone sweeping, a distant radio. I made tea and drank it while it was still hot, which I realized I hadn't done in years. I don't know what comes next. There is no plan, no clever next step waiting in my pocket. But for the first time in a long while, I took a full breath all the way to the bottom, and it was enough. Starting over doesn't always look like a leap. Sometimes it looks like a Wednesday morning, an unhurried cup of tea, and the first deep breath in years.
