I Refused to Help My Parents Financially... Now My Family Says I'm Ungrateful
Growing up, my parents sacrificed a lot for us. We weren't rich. Far from it. But somehow they always found a way to pay school fees, feed us, and keep a roof over our heads. I've never forgotten that. That's why this decision has been eating me up. About two years ago, I finally got a decent job. It wasn't a huge salary, but it was the first time in my life I felt like I could breathe a little. The problem is... Nobody knew how many responsibilities I already had. House rent. Transportation. Loan repayments. Helping my younger sister through school. Trying to save something for my own future. From the outside, it looked like I was doing well. Inside, I was barely surviving from one payday to the next. A few months ago, my parents called me. They needed money to renovate part of the family house. They said everyone was contributing. The amount they asked from me was more than half of my monthly salary. I politely explained that I couldn't afford it. I told them I could help with a smaller amount instead. The conversation changed immediately. My father became quiet. My mother sounded disappointed. A few days later, my elder brother called. He said I had forgotten where I came from. One aunt even said, "So after everything your parents did for you, this is how you repay them?" Since then, family gatherings have become awkward. Some relatives barely speak to me anymore. What hurts is that nobody asked if I was financially okay. Everyone just assumed that because I have a job, I have plenty of money. I still send money home whenever I genuinely can. I still buy my parents things from time to time. But I couldn't give what I simply didn't have. Now I keep asking myself... Did I fail my parents? Or is it okay to protect your own financial future, even when the people asking for help are the ones who raised you? If you were in my shoes... What would you have done?
What would you have done?
