My Wife Asked My Younger Sister to Leave, and Now I Feel Caught in the Middle

My younger sister has been living with me and my wife for the past six months. Everything seemed fine on the surface, but yesterday, I came home from work earlier than usual and found her packing her belongings while crying. My wife was also visibly angry, so I immediately knew something had happened. When I asked what was going on, my wife explained that my sister had used her expensive cream without asking for permission. When she confronted her about it, my sister became defensive, talked back to her, and even called her stingy. I was honestly angry with my sister. The cream belonged to my wife, and I felt she had no right to use it without asking. I told my sister clearly that she was wrong, especially for disrespecting my wife in her own home. I did not defend her actions or make excuses for her. I wanted her to understand that what she had done was unacceptable. However, I was also upset when I discovered that my wife had already told my sister to leave the house before I returned. I felt that because she was my sister, my wife should have spoken to me before asking her to leave. It wasn't that I believed my sister should escape the consequences of her actions. I simply felt that something that serious should have been discussed between the two of us first. My wife strongly disagreed. She told me that I was always more concerned about my sister's feelings than hers. According to her, whenever there was an issue involving my sister, I made her feel as though she had no real say in her own home. That statement hurt me because I genuinely believed I was trying to be fair to both of them. I had already admitted that my sister was wrong. I had also told her to apologize and respect my wife. But apparently, my wife still felt that I wasn't supporting her enough. Eventually, my sister left and went to stay with a friend. Watching her pack her things and walk out was painful, even though I knew she had made a mistake. Later, I called her and reminded her that she was wrong for using my wife's belongings without permission and for disrespecting her. I didn't defend what she had done. But my sister was still hurt. She told me that she felt abandoned by me when she needed her brother the most. Now the house is quiet. My wife keeps saying that things are more peaceful since my sister left, but I honestly don't feel at peace. The more I think about everything, the more I realise that the cream may not have been the real problem. There were probably other things that had been happening between my wife and my sister that I didn't know about or simply didn't pay enough attention to. Now my sister feels like I chose my wife over her, while my wife feels like I never truly chose her when it mattered. And that is what is confusing me the most. I don't want my sister to feel abandoned, but I also don't want my wife to feel like a stranger in her own home. Looking back, I keep asking myself whether I handled the situation correctly or whether I should have approached everything differently from the beginning. How should I have handled this situation? Because right now, I feel like I have somehow failed both of them.
