My Husband Only Understood My Struggles After He Lost His Job.

My husband has been unemployed for the past one and a half years, and our lives have changed significantly during this period. Some of these changes have been positive, while others have been quite challenging. We have two children—a six-year-old and a two-year-old. Since losing his job, my husband now wakes up before dawn every morning to prepare our older son for school. After dropping him off, he returns home to care for our two-year-old, who is not yet in school. He also picks up our older son after school and looks after both children until I return from work. Ironically, when he was employed, he did not participate in any of these responsibilities. The majority of childcare and household duties were handled by me. One aspect that still amuses me is the issue of the washing machine. While he was working, I requested for years that we purchase one, as handwashing clothes after work was exhausting. I even offered to contribute half the cost, but he consistently postponed the decision. Now that he is primarily responsible for laundry, he has become a strong advocate for buying a washing machine. Having experienced the workload himself, he now understands why I insisted on it. The current issue, however, is different. He recently told me that since I am the sole income earner, I should begin sending monthly financial support to his parents until he secures new employment. While I do not object to assisting them occasionally, committing to a fixed monthly obligation feels overwhelming given our own financial responsibilities, including rent, school fees, household expenses, and the care of two young children. I feel conflicted. On one hand, I understand that they are his parents and may also be facing financial difficulties. On the other hand, I feel that our immediate family is already under considerable financial strain. I am unsure whether I am being unreasonable in hesitating to commit to monthly support for them, or whether it is justified to prioritize my own household until we achieve greater financial stability.
