My Girlfriend Started Wearing Waist Beads and Leg Chains, and I Don't Recognise Her Anymore
I honestly don't know if I am being paranoid, superstitious, or if my instincts are trying to tell me something. I have been with my girlfriend for six years. Six years of love, fights, sacrifices, memories, and plans for the future. She is not just my girlfriend; she is someone I have built a huge part of my life around. I have always believed she would eventually become my wife. But for the past five months, I have been struggling with something I never thought would become a serious issue between us. She suddenly started wearing waist beads and leg chains. At first, I honestly didn't think much of it. I noticed the waist beads one day and asked her about them. She laughed and told me they were just fashion accessories. Later, she started wearing leg chains too. I told her I wasn't comfortable with it. Maybe my reaction came from the things I have heard growing up. There are countless stories about waist beads being used for different spiritual purposes, and because of those stories, I have never been comfortable with them. I didn't accuse her of doing anything spiritual. I simply told her how I felt. She told me I was being too superstitious. According to her, "It's just fashion. Nothing more." I tried to let it go. But then something else started happening. Her behaviour began changing. The woman I had known for six years started becoming distant. Conversations that used to last for hours became short and dry. She became more secretive with her phone. Sometimes she would disappear emotionally even when she was physically beside me. There were days I would look at her and feel like I was sitting beside someone I had known for years but somehow no longer understood. Our relationship became filled with arguments. The more I complained about the waist beads and leg chains, the more she insisted that I was trying to control her. And maybe that's what makes this situation so difficult for me. What if she is actually right? What if I am allowing superstition to destroy a relationship that has lasted six years? What if the beads truly mean nothing beyond fashion? But another part of me keeps asking why her personality and attitude changed so drastically around the same period she started wearing them. I have tried to convince myself that the two things are unrelated. Maybe she has simply changed. Maybe she is tired of the relationship. Maybe there is someone else. Maybe she is going through something she hasn't told me. Or maybe I am connecting two completely unrelated things because I am already afraid. The hardest part is that I still love her. If I didn't love her, perhaps walking away would be easy. But how do you end six years with someone because of a feeling you cannot even prove? I don't want to accuse an innocent woman of something simply because of stories I have heard. At the same time, I don't want to ignore my instincts and later regret it. Whenever I bring up the beads, she gets angry and tells me I need to grow up and stop attaching spiritual meanings to everything. She says she wears them because she likes how they look. Maybe that's all there is to it. But then why does my heart still feel unsettled? I am now at a crossroads. Do I respect her explanation and stop making an issue out of the waist beads and leg chains? Do I focus on the actual changes in her behaviour instead of the things she wears? Or should I trust my instincts and reconsider this relationship before things get worse? Six years is not six days. There is too much history between us for me to make a careless decision. I don't want people to insult my girlfriend, and I don't want anyone to blindly support my fears either. I genuinely need honest opinions. Am I being too superstitious, or is there something I should be paying attention to? If you were in my shoes, what would you do?
