My Deepest Secret From University Still Haunts Me

There is something I have carried since my university days that nobody knows. Not my wife, not my siblings, not even the friend involved. We were inseparable back then. Everyone on campus knew us as best friends. We attended lectures together, shared food when money was tight, and looked out for each other. I genuinely loved him like a brother. During our final year, he started dating a girl he was completely crazy about. He was convinced she was the woman he would marry after graduation. He trusted me so much that whenever they had misunderstandings, he would ask me to talk to her because she also trusted me. That was where everything began. The more we talked, the more she opened up to me. We started chatting late into the night. At first it felt harmless. Then the conversations became flirtatious. I knew I should have stopped, but I didn't. One evening, while my friend had travelled home for a family emergency, she invited me over to return one of his books. I went. We crossed a line that should never have been crossed. It happened only once, but once was enough. A few weeks later, she ended the relationship with him. He was devastated. He cried in front of me, asking over and over what he had done wrong. I sat there pretending to comfort him while hiding the truth that could have shattered him. He never suspected me. He blamed himself for years. He thought he wasn't good enough. I watched my best friend carry pain that I helped create, and I never had the courage to confess because I knew it would destroy our friendship and probably ruin my reputation on campus. We graduated and life moved on. Today we barely speak, not because of what happened, but because life simply took us in different directions. Sometimes I wonder if he ever found out. Sometimes I wonder if she ever told anyone. The guilt has never left me. People often say betrayal from strangers hurts, but betrayal from someone you call your brother leaves scars that never truly heal. If you are reading this and you have ever been trusted with someone's relationship, please don't make the mistake I made. Some secrets don't stay buried because they are forgotten. They stay buried because the person carrying them is too ashamed to dig them up.
