My Brother Became My Greatest Responsibility

My parents died within two years of each other, leaving me alone with my younger brother who has Down syndrome. Since then, I've been his brother, parent, caregiver, and sometimes his only friend. There were days I skipped meals so he could eat. I turned down job opportunities in other cities because I couldn't leave him behind. I sold personal belongings just to pay for his medications, clothes, and other needs. While my mates were building their own families, I was learning how to calm him during difficult moments and protect him from people who mocked him. The hardest part isn't the financial burden. It's watching people stare at him in public, laugh at him, or treat him like he doesn't deserve kindness. They don't see the beautiful soul behind his condition. They don't know he has taught me more about unconditional love than anyone else ever has. Some nights, I cry quietly because I feel exhausted and scared of the future. I keep asking myself, "What will happen to him if something happens to me?" But despite all the struggles, my brother has taught me patience, compassion, and the true meaning of family. He reminds me every day that love isn't measured by convenience but by sacrifice. If you have someone living with a disability in your family, please don't hide them or be ashamed of them. They didn't choose their condition. Sometimes, the strongest people are those who smile through challenges the rest of us can barely imagine.
