MY 21-YEAR-OLD SON IS DESTROYING MY PEACE

I honestly don’t know where I went wrong. I’m 48 years old, and my 21-year-old son is turning my home into a place I barely recognize. He doesn’t work. He doesn’t contribute. He barely takes care of himself, and getting him to do the simplest things has become a daily battle. I have to remind a grown man to shower, brush his teeth, clean his room and take responsibility for his own life. His room is beyond messy. Dirty clothes, rubbish, old food and things I don’t even want to identify are scattered everywhere. I’ve tried talking to him. I’ve begged. I’ve shouted. I’ve threatened to stop paying for everything. Nothing works. And then I discovered something that completely broke me. I caught him doing something extremely inappropriate online with a much older stranger. I was shocked, angry and honestly scared about the kind of life he is heading toward. This is my son. The child I sacrificed for. The child I thought would eventually become independent and build a life for himself. Instead, he seems completely comfortable sitting at home while I pay the bills and carry the entire responsibility. What scares me most is that he doesn’t even seem unhappy with his situation. He has no job. No plans. No ambition. No urgency. I’m beginning to wonder whether continuing to rescue him is actually making things worse. I love my son, but I’m exhausted. At what point does helping your child become enabling them? And how do you make a 21-year-old understand that life will not always protect him from the consequences of his choices? Please, I genuinely need advice. What would you do if this were your child?

What would you do if this were your child?
