The Medication That Saved My Mind but Stole My Confidence

A few years ago, I was prescribed antipsychotic medication after going through a difficult mental health crisis. At the time, the medication felt like a lifeline. It helped quiet the chaos in my mind and gave me a chance to regain control of my life. As the months went by, however, I started noticing changes in my body that I couldn't ignore. My hands began to shake constantly. At first, I thought it was stress or fatigue, but the trembling became more noticeable and harder to hide. I am a nurse by profession, and my job requires precision, confidence, and steady hands. Tasks that once felt natural suddenly became challenging. Drawing medication, inserting IV lines, and performing other skilled procedures now fill me with anxiety because I worry that my shaking will affect my performance. What makes this even more frustrating is that I worked so hard to build my career. Nursing is not just a job to me; it is part of who I am. Seeing my abilities decline because of medication side effects has been heartbreaking. I often feel trapped between two difficult choices. On one hand, the medication helps keep my mental health stable. On the other hand, the side effects make it harder for me to do the work I love. Some days, I wonder if people around me notice my struggle, even when I try my best to hide it. The emotional impact has been just as difficult as the physical symptoms. My confidence has taken a hit, and I sometimes question whether I can continue in the profession I sacrificed so much to enter. The fear of making mistakes weighs heavily on me. I am sharing this anonymously because I know I cannot be the only person facing this kind of dilemma. Has anyone else experienced medication side effects that affected their career? How did you cope, and were you able to find a solution that worked for both your health and your future?
