I Secretly Ruined My Sister's Future, and She Still Calls Me Her Hero
I have carried this secret for over twelve years, and every time my younger sister tells people I'm the best brother in the world, I feel like a fraud. We grew up in a a struggling home. Our parents couldn't afford to send both of us to university at the same time, so whoever got the scholarship first would go. My sister was the brilliant one. She studied day and night and eventually earned admission with a partial scholarship. I, on the other hand, wasn't so lucky. The problem was that my pride couldn't handle it. Everyone in the family praised her constantly. Relatives would say, "She's the one who will change this family's story." They barely mentioned me anymore. One afternoon, while helping her check her admission documents, I discovered she had received an email asking her to complete one final registration before a deadline. I deleted it. I also emptied the trash folder. She never knew. When the deadline passed, the scholarship was withdrawn. She cried for weeks, blaming the school for not informing her. I pretended to be angry with the university too. Since she couldn't continue her education, I got another opportunity the following year. My parents borrowed money and sent me to school instead. Today, I'm successful. The painful part is that she still tells everyone that I sacrificed so much to make the family proud. She says she's happy that at least one of us succeeded. She has no idea that the life she lost... I stole. Every time she hugs me or buys birthday gifts for my children, I feel like I don't deserve any of it. I've thought about confessing many times, but what good would it do now? It won't give her back the years she lost. It will only destroy the only image she has ever had of me. So I smile, say "thank you," and continue living with a secret that becomes heavier every year. If you were in my sister's shoes and discovered this after twelve years, would you want to know the truth, or would you rather never find out?
