I Never Thought That Would Be Our Last Shift Together
I still find it difficult to believe that my colleague, someone I worked alongside almost every day, is no longer with us. We were both security guards, doing the same job and facing the same challenges that come with working long hours. He was just 19 years old, a young boy with so much life ahead of him. Yesterday, he went to sleep after his duty like he normally did. There was nothing unusual about him. We had no idea that those would be his final moments. According to what we later discovered, sometime between 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. yesterday, he passed away in his sleep. Nobody noticed anything immediately. We thought he was simply sleeping because of tiredness from work. But when it was time to wake him up, he didn't respond. We called his name. We tried to wake him. Nothing. That was when we realized something was seriously wrong. He was gone. I honestly cannot explain the shock of seeing someone so young die like that. Just the day before, he was alive, working, talking and making plans like every other young person. He was only 19. He had dreams. He had people who loved him. He had a future he was looking forward to. But sometime between 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. yesterday, everything changed. His death has reminded me that life is extremely fragile. Sometimes we make plans for tomorrow without realizing that tomorrow is not promised to anyone. Rest well, my brother and colleague. We wore the same uniform, shared the same struggles and worked side by side. You were only 19, but your death has taught me a lesson I will never forget. May your soul rest in perfect peace.
