I Lied During My Job Interview... Now They've Promoted Me
About a year ago, I was desperate for a job. I had been unemployed for months, my savings were gone, and I was struggling to pay my bills. Every interview seemed to end the same way—I wasn't "qualified enough." When I finally got another interview, I made a decision I'm still not proud of. I exaggerated my Excel and data analysis skills. I knew the role required someone with strong technical abilities, and I convinced myself that if I could just get my foot in the door, I would figure the rest out later. To my surprise, I got the job. The first few weeks were terrifying. Every task involving spreadsheets made me panic because I was afraid someone would discover the truth. Instead of giving up, I made myself a promise. Every evening after work, I spent hours watching tutorials, taking online courses, and practicing until late at night. I barely had a social life because all I wanted was to become the employee I had claimed to be. Slowly, things started to change. The tasks that once scared me became routine. My confidence grew, my performance improved, and my managers began trusting me with bigger responsibilities. Last week, my boss called me into his office. I honestly thought I had made a mistake. Instead, he smiled, praised my consistency, and promoted me to supervise a team. He said I had become one of the strongest performers in the department and believed I was ready for more responsibility. Everyone congratulated me, but I couldn't fully enjoy the moment. Part of me feels I've earned this promotion because I worked incredibly hard to become good at my job. But another part of me keeps remembering the lie that got me hired in the first place. Sometimes I wonder if I'm living proof that people can grow into opportunities they weren't initially ready for... or if I'm just an impostor who got lucky. If you were in my position, would you simply be grateful for how far you've come, or would that lie continue to haunt you?
