I Left Home Because My Parents Were Choosing My Future for Me
I’m 22 years old, and I’m sharing this because I genuinely need honest opinions from people who can look at my situation from the outside. My parents wanted me to learn tailoring at a workshop they chose for me. I understood that they were trying to give me a skill that could help me become independent, but the problem was that I wanted to learn a different type of clothing design. I explained this to them several times, but they insisted that I attend the workshop they had already chosen. I decided to give it a chance because I didn’t want them to think I was being stubborn or ungrateful. But after a year, I honestly have very little to show for it. One of the biggest challenges was the language barrier. Most of the communication at the workshop was in a language I don’t fully understand, so it was difficult for me to follow instructions, ask questions, or properly understand what I was being taught. What hurt even more was watching apprentices who started after me progress faster while I remained stuck. Most of the time, I was sent on errands instead of being properly taught. There was very little guidance or patience, and I was often expected to figure things out by myself. Whenever I made mistakes, it created tension, which made me even more afraid to try. Eventually, the workshop became a place I dreaded going to. I wasn’t just struggling to learn a skill; I felt trapped, ignored, and completely unheard. I started losing confidence in myself because I felt like no matter how hard I tried, I was never going to succeed in that environment. I tried explaining all of this to my parents, but they dismissed my concerns as excuses. To them, leaving the workshop meant I was lazy, unserious, or ungrateful for the opportunity they had given me. What they didn’t seem to understand was that my dreams and career goals simply don’t align with the path they chose for me. Every time I talked about what I actually wanted to do with my life, my aspirations were brushed aside. I began feeling like I was living someone else’s dream while slowly giving up on my own. Eventually, the pressure became too much, and I left home. I didn’t leave because I hate my parents or because I don’t appreciate everything they have done for me. I left because I felt like I was being forced into a life that didn’t feel like mine, and I desperately needed some space to think about my future. Now my family is upset, relatives have become involved, and I’m being portrayed as a rebellious daughter who has abandoned her responsibilities. Meanwhile, I’m staying at my school hostel with very little money and honestly don’t know what my next step should be. Part of me wants to go back home, apologize, and make peace with my family. Another part of me is afraid that if I return, I’ll be forced back into the same situation and lose even more time pursuing something I don’t want. I love my parents, but I also believe I should have some say in the life I want to build for myself. So, was I wrong for leaving the workshop and choosing myself, or should I have stayed and continued trying to make my parents happy?
