I Destroyed a 10-Year Friendship Because I Believed the Wrong Person
A few days ago, I was reading a heartbreaking anonymous story on Eucarl.com about a young woman whose boyfriend convinced her that she had a "spiritual husband" who was destroying his business and preventing her from having children. He even sent her to a native doctor, and she ended up borrowing ₦200,000 for rituals before realizing she had been manipulated. After reading the story and few comments, I shook my head and told myself, "Some people are too quick to believe spiritual accusations." Cos I made a similar mistake. My best friend and I had been inseparable for almost ten years. We started as classmates, became business partners, and eventually became like brothers. He knew my family, and I knew his. If anyone had told me we would ever become enemies, I would have laughed. Things changed when my life suddenly became difficult. My business started losing customers. Every plan I made failed. I was constantly sick, and almost every night I had disturbing dreams. I became desperate for answers. One evening, after a church programme, someone called me aside and said God had revealed that someone very close to me was spiritually fighting my destiny. According to the person, the enemy wasn't far away—it was someone I trusted completely. That statement refused to leave my mind. The more I thought about it, the more I started suspecting my best friend. Every innocent thing he did suddenly looked suspicious. If he asked how business was going, I believed he was monitoring me. If he congratulated me, I wondered whether he was pretending. Friends around me added fuel to the fire. "Your greatest enemies are always close." "Be careful who knows your next move." "Not everyone clapping for you wants you to succeed." Instead of talking to him, I began avoiding him. I stopped answering his calls, ignored his messages, removed him from all my social media, and told mutual friends to stay away from him. One day he came to my house unannounced and begged me to explain what he had done. I looked him in the face and told him I knew he was behind my problems spiritually. He stood there speechless. He asked me for proof, but I had none. I only had fear, assumptions, and what people had told me. He left quietly. Months later, I discovered that my business wasn't failing because of any spiritual attack. My former employee had been stealing money and chasing customers away behind my back. The health issues I blamed on spiritual attacks were caused by stress and high blood pressure. The truth came too late. I tried apologizing to my friend several times, but he refused to forgive me. He told someone, "The day you accused me of destroying your life spiritually was the day our friendship died." That sentence still breaks my heart. I still believe in God, and I believe prayer has power. But I also learned that not every hardship should be blamed on the people closest to us. Sometimes fear speaks louder than truth. And sometimes, by the time the truth finally arrives, the people we love have already walked away forever.
