I Borrowed ₦200,000 to Save My Best Friend... He Took the Money and Disappeared
I believed I was helping my closest friend. One evening, he called me in distress. His landlord had issued a final warning: if he could not raise ₦200,000 before the weekend, he and his family would be evicted. I did not have the money. Still, I could not bear the thought of someone I cared about becoming homeless. So I borrowed it. I assured the person who lent me the funds, “I will repay everything next month.” My friend received the ₦200,000. He thanked me repeatedly and promised to repay me as soon as he regained his footing. That was nearly a year ago. Today, he barely responds to my calls. At times, he reads my messages and leaves them unanswered. Meanwhile, the people I borrowed from have made my life increasingly difficult. Every day brings another call, another reminder, another promise I cannot fulfill. I wanted to be someone others could rely on. Instead, I became someone burdened by debt because I tried to solve another person's problem with money I did not have. The most difficult part is not even the debt. It is looking at myself each morning and realizing that one decision, made with good intentions but poor judgment, has cost me my peace. If I could go back, I would have been honest and said the two hardest words I know: “I can't.”
