I WAS HELPING HIM WIN MY FRIEND, BUT SOMEHOW I FELL FOR HIM

About ten months ago, a guy approached my friend because he liked her. He was shy, nervous and honestly didn't know how to express himself, so I decided to help him. I spoke to him, encouraged him and even gave him advice on how to approach her. At that point, I had absolutely no feelings for him. I was only trying to help a guy who seemed genuinely interested in my friend. But when my friend finally realised he liked her, her reaction was far from what any of us expected. She didn't just reject him; she completely shut him down. She told him bluntly that she could never be interested in him and questioned why he even thought he had a chance with her. She made it clear that she wasn't attracted to him and warned him not to disturb her with his feelings again. The rejection embarrassed him badly, and I honestly felt sorry for him. After that, I continued talking to him, mainly because I felt bad about what had happened. I listened whenever he wanted to talk and tried to encourage him to get over the situation. But somehow, the conversations that were supposed to be about my friend gradually became conversations about us. We started talking more frequently, and he began calling me, checking on me and asking about my day. Sometimes we would meet just to talk and spend time together. At first, I didn't think anything was happening. I kept telling myself that I was simply being a good friend to someone who had gone through an embarrassing rejection. But the more time we spent together, the more comfortable I became around him. Without realising it, I started looking forward to his calls, messages and visits. Then I noticed something that scared me. Whenever we went for a while without talking, I would miss him. I started thinking about him at random times, wondering what he was doing or whether he had eaten. And whenever he mentioned my friend or talked about how he initially liked her, I felt a strange jealousy that I couldn't explain. That was when I began asking myself the question I had been avoiding: Have I actually fallen for this man? How did I go from being the person helping him get my friend to becoming the person who secretly wanted his attention for herself? I never planned for this to happen, and I certainly didn't set out to take my friend's place. The situation is even more complicated because he entered my life because of her. Even though she rejected him harshly and made it clear that she wanted nothing to do with him, I still feel guilty about developing feelings for him. What if she suddenly changes her mind? What if she finds out how close we've become and thinks I betrayed her? I don't want our friendship to suffer because of something I never intended to happen. But the truth is, I can't deny my feelings anymore. Maybe it's genuine love, or perhaps spending almost a year talking, laughing and sharing personal moments has simply created a strong emotional attachment. I don't even know if he sees me as more than the friend who helped him approach my friend in the first place. So now I'm stuck between my heart and my conscience. Should I tell him how I feel and risk destroying the friendship we've built? Should I tell my friend first, even though she rejected him so badly? Or should I quietly distance myself before these feelings become too deep and somebody eventually gets hurt? If you were in my shoes, would you follow your heart or walk away?
