The Help I Thought Was Friendship Has Become My Biggest Burden
I reconnected with a friend from secondary school about two years ago when I was going through a very difficult period in my life. Things were not working out for me financially, and I was struggling to keep myself together. He stepped in at a time when I genuinely needed help. He gave me some money, helped me sort out a few urgent problems, and constantly reminded me that I could always count on him. I was deeply grateful because, honestly, I don't know how I would have survived that period without his support. The problem started not long after my situation improved. He began asking me for financial assistance almost every time we spoke. At first, I didn't complain because I remembered everything he had done for me. Whenever he needed money, I tried my best to help, even when it wasn't convenient. But gradually, the requests became more frequent and more demanding. Sometimes he would ask for amounts I simply couldn't afford, and when I explained that I didn't have the money, he would become cold. One day, I finally told him I couldn't help him financially because I had my own responsibilities to handle. Instead of understanding, he said I had changed and that I was becoming ungrateful. He reminded me of everything he had done for me years ago and asked if that was how I planned to repay him. I was shocked because I never denied that he helped me. I have always appreciated it, but I never agreed that his help meant I would become financially responsible for him forever. Since then, almost every disagreement between us somehow ends with him bringing up the past. If I say no to giving him money, he says, "After everything I did for you?" Sometimes I even borrow money just to avoid the argument because I don't want to look ungrateful. But deep down, I'm becoming tired. I have started wondering whether the help he gave me was really an act of friendship or whether he expected me to keep paying for it in different ways. I still appreciate what he did for me when I needed help, and I will never erase that from my mind. But does receiving help from someone mean you owe them financial assistance whenever they ask? At what point does gratitude become emotional blackmail? I don't want to lose a childhood friend, but I also don't want to spend the rest of my life proving that I am grateful by giving him money I don't have.
