I Can’t Urinate Unless I Hear Running Water — I’m Beginning to Get Worried

I’m a 35-year-old woman, and I’m sharing this because I honestly don’t know what is happening to me anymore. For the past eight months, I’ve noticed something very unusual whenever I need to urinate. Normally, when you sit on the toilet and need to go, you simply relax and it happens. But for me, it has become almost impossible to urinate unless I hear the sound of running water. The first time it happened, I didn’t think much of it. I sat down to urinate, but nothing was coming out. I wasn’t experiencing any significant pain or burning—I simply couldn’t start. Then, by chance, I turned on the tap, and the moment I heard the water running, I suddenly began urinating normally. I laughed it off and assumed it was a coincidence. But it happened again, and again. Before long, I realized that my bladder seemed to respond specifically to the sound of running water. If I’m in a bathroom with a tap, I turn it on and listen for a few seconds, and I can urinate. But when there is no tap available, I have to make a “shheeeeeee” sound with my mouth to imitate running water before I can start urinating. 😭 At first, I found it amusing. Now, however, I’m beginning to find it both concerning and frustrating. Imagine being out in public and needing to use the restroom, only to sit there for several minutes because you cannot urinate unless you hear running water. I have spoken to my doctor about it, but so far we have not been able to determine exactly why this is happening. It has now been ongoing for more than eight months, which is what concerns me most. I understand some people may joke about this, but I am genuinely looking for insight from anyone who may have experienced something similar. Has anyone here ever had difficulty urinating unless they heard running water? If so, did you eventually find out what was causing it? Was it related to stress, anxiety, a bladder condition, or something else entirely? And most importantly, how did you overcome it? Please, no insults or unnecessary jokes. I am genuinely concerned and would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone with relevant experience. Sometimes, personal experiences can help others identify what they should discuss with their doctor. Has this ever happened to you or someone you know?
